Professor O鈥機onnell is a consultant haematologist at the National Coagulation Centre (NCC) in St James鈥檚 188体育 and has taken on the role of national haemophilia director since early 2018.
Professor O鈥機onnell completed specialist training in haematology in Ireland in 2001 and haemostasis and thrombosis in the UK in 2004.
The NCC is the lead comprehensive care centre for adults with bleeding disorders in Ireland and provides a hub of clinical services, research, training and education on a national basis.

As a member of the National Haemophilia Council, Professor O鈥機onnell is responsible for the oversight and governance of the quality of care and services provided for people with bleeding disorders nationally.
Professor O鈥機onnell and the consultant team in the NCC also provide specialist diagnostic and treatment services for thrombotic conditions including obstetric and cancer-associated thrombosis and they provide consultant clinical input to the National Coagulation Laboratory in the hospital.
Professor O鈥機onnell is the current Chair of the coagulation special interest group of the Irish Haematology Society and is a member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) and the Haematology Association of Ireland. The NCC is currently twinned with the Haemophilia Centre at Al Bashir 188体育, Amman, Jordan as part of the WFH twinning programme with a five-year programme (2019-2023) led by Professor O鈥機onnell, in partnership with colleagues in the NCC and the Paediatric Haemophilia Centre in Children鈥檚 Health Ireland, Crumlin.
Professor O'Connell's research interests include clinical trials in novel therapies for haemophilia, clinical outcomes in haemophilia and application of information technology solutions in the management of haemophilia.
