Professor Wagener is a consultant microbiologist at St James鈥檚 188体育 and the professor of clinical microbiology at Trinity College Dublin. He completed his higher professional training in clinical microbiology at University of Munich in Germany in 2014. He was senior lecturer and consultant at University of Munich and University of W眉rzburg in Germany before he moved to Ireland in 2020. He is co-director of the Irish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory at St James鈥檚 188体育 and lead of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology Excellence Center at St James鈥檚 188体育 and Trinity College Dublin.
Professor Wagener鈥檚 research interests include medical mycology, antifungal agents and the host鈥檚 immune response to fungal pathogens. He is also interested in the clinical evaluation of diagnostic tests.
