Visiting the Hospital

St James鈥檚 Hospital (SJH) is committed to providing safe, effective, person-centred healthcare in an environment that is safe for patients, staff and visitors.

We recognise how important it is for patients to have family and friends visit while they are in the hospital, but we still need to be aware of the risk of infection entering the hospital.  There are some measures you can take to reduce this risk.

  • If you have any cold, flu, COVID symptoms or vomiting or diarrhoea please postpone the visit until you are 48 hours symptom free.
  • Please respect the hospital visiting hours between 2.30pm-3.30pm and 7.30pm-8.30pm Monday to Sunday.
  • Clean your hands on entering and leaving the hospital to protect the both patients, staff and you.
  • Do not to sit on patients鈥 beds or touch any medical equipment.
  • Be aware that by visiting the hospital you are accepting the risks associated with attending a healthcare setting.

Where possible we encourage, off ward visiting, which takes place in the hospital concourse and ward visiting for patients who are unable to mobilise to the concourse.  Visiting on the ward may not always be possible and we advise you to discuss this with the Nurse Manager.

We would ask all visitors to observe the following:

  • The hospital and its campus are designated no smoking areas. You are asked to respect this and refrain from smoking while on campus. This includes the use of electronic smoking devices.
  • If you are bringing food into patients, please check with staff if it is safe to do so.
  • Use visitor toilets rather than patient toilets, to reduce the risk of cross-infection.
  • Please dispose of any litter in the bins provided. Help us to keep our communal areas, entrances, lifts and stairwells clean and tidy.
  • Flowers or plants are not permitted for infection prevention and control reasons.
  • Visiting during protected mealtimes is not permitted, with the exception of carers who provide assistance. This enables patients to eat and enjoy their meals uninterrupted, as good nutrition is essential for their recovery.
  • Never bring alcohol or drugs to patients.

During visiting you may be asked to leave the patient for short periods so that essential care can be provided.

Please be aware of the importance of this symbol if displayed on the ward.
End of Life Symbol

This spiral symbol means that a patient is imminently dying or has died. We would ask all visitors to be respectful and avoid mobile phone use and to be aware that people who are grieving may be on the ward.
