The Centre for Learning and Development (CLD) is a multidisciplinary education centre. It provides high-quality continuous education, mandatory training and development programmes which are readily accessible and responsive to the needs of all staff within the hospital.

The CLD service delivers over 11,000 blended training sessions and is accessed by over 12,000 people every year.

St James鈥檚 Hospital is committed to investing in and promoting the development of our staff. The CLD is central to helping the hospital achieve this goal.

Annually, we invest:

  • Over 鈧�600,000 for 3rd level education fees
  • 鈧�50,000 in loans towards further education
  • 鈧�25,000 to support attendance at national and international seminars
  • In offering 2,800 paid study days.

The Centre for Learning and Development (CLD) provides accredited 3rd level programmes in partnership with awarding bodies and third level institutions such as Quality Qualifications Ireland, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin.

We also design and deliver high-quality accredited programmes in continuous education, required training and personal/professional development programmes. In partnership with our educational partner, Trinity College Dublin, we currently offer over 140 courses in clinical and non-clinical topics, ranging from basic introductory courses to externally validated masters level. 

  • Depending on the required training, the Centre for Learning and Development (CLD) services can be accessed by staff online via  or in person in the CLD building.

      • Perioperative nursing
      • Chronic illness management
      • Vascular disease management
      • Haematology/ oncology nursing
      • Medical/ surgical nursing
      • Mechanical ventilation programme for nurses
      • Palliative care programme
      • Endoscopy programme
    • Clinical skill updates and certifications in basic and advanced life support, venepuncture and cannulation, management of central venous access devices, first aid and regularly run clinical skills case scenario鈥檚 in a state of the art clinical skills simulation suite
    • Online programme development: electronic patient record (EPR) training, mandatory training programmes, clinical educational programmes
    • Nursing Grand Rounds: a monthly forum to share clinical expertise, experiences and nursing best practices
    • Wellbeing: financial wellbeing workshops and mindfulness-based stress reduction courses
    • Annual multidisciplinary research clinical audit and quality improvements seminars, showcasing research that has been carried out throughout the hospital by poster or oral presentations.
