Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (muscles and nerves). Neurological disorders affect in excess of 700,000 people in Ireland and include Parkinson鈥檚 disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, cognitive disorders including dementia, sleep disorders like narcolepsy and muscle and nerve disorders like peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis and motor neuron disease. Neurological disorders account for one in eight presentations to general practice and one in five presentations to the Emergency Department.

The Neurology Department provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for the entire range of neurological disorders in patients presenting acutely to hospital and patients referred to ambulatory services. The department runs general and subspecialty clinics, provides day hospital and inpatient services, provides a busy consultation service to our colleagues across the hospital, provides a broad range of teaching and training at all levels and is engaged in research and audit on an ongoing basis.

The department integrates with many services across the hospital to provide care, including neurophysiology, rehabilitation medicine, the stroke service, psychiatry, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging and medicine for the elderly.
