St James鈥檚 Hospital is the largest acute teaching hospital in Ireland and is partnered academically with Trinity College Dublin. The nursing community with a multinational staff of over 1,600 is vibrant, dynamic and plays a central role in the delivery of quality care.
St James鈥檚 Hospital鈥檚 nursing team is dynamic and innovative. They make an enormous contribution to patient care and are driven by achieving excellence, continuous improvement and innovation in their work.
There are over 40 different inpatient and ambulatory care clinical areas that our nurses work in, with many of these clinical areas being national or tertiary referral centres. This offers nurses the opportunity to work with experts in services leading with innovative and specialist patient care.
Here at St James鈥檚 Hospital, we are also committed to our nurses鈥� professional and personal development. As a hospital, we actively support and encourage our nursing staff, at all levels, to enhance their skills, develop and expand their professional practice, and participate in continuing training and postgraduate education programmes.
One of the key benefits of working in St James鈥檚 Hospital is our commitment to nurse education, training and development. We, with our academic partners Trinity College Dublin , educate and train 270 undergraduate nursing students each year. Together with Trinity we facilitate, support and fund a number of accredited postgraduate courses in a wide range of specialities. The Centre for Learning and Development offers a broad range of Accredited Foundation courses or short courses either via e-learning or specific clinical facilitated study days.
Nursing research is paramount and encouraged at all grades. The successful partnership between the hospital and the Trinity Centre for Practice & Healthcare Innovation (a research center located within the School of Nursing and Midwifery) has resulted in advancing the nursing research agenda within the nursing team.
We are on a journey! 188体育 is actively working towards attaining Pathway to Excellence庐 accreditation. The Pathway to Excellence庐 programme is a framework for nursing and midwifery excellence, focusing on creating and sustaining a positive practice environment for our staff. It is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC) which has identified six standards in developing a positive practice environment.
These are:
Shared Decision Making, Leadership, Safety, Quality, Wellbeing and Professional Development.
The Pathway to Excellence庐 standards impact a range of factors that influence patient and staff outcomes, such as; employee turnover, job satisfaction and engagement, productivity and teamwork, nurse-sensitive quality indicators, safety events, and patient satisfaction.
As an organisation, St James鈥檚 Hospital is committed to enculturating these standards to improve nurse satisfaction, with the ultimate aim of:

鈥� Championing high-quality nursing practice.
Our goal to achieving Pathway to Excellence庐 accreditation stemmed from our involvement in the Magnet4Europe project, an initiative that aimed to reshape the work environment for staff to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
Seven hospitals in the UK and one hospital in Switzerland currently have Pathway to Excellence庐 accreditation, with St James鈥檚 Hospital being the first hospital in Ireland to apply.
