Professor Ryan graduated in medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 1988. He is a clinical professor at Trinity College Dublin.
Professor Ryan completed specialist fellowship training in interventional radiology and abdominal imaging at Massachusetts General 188体育, Harvard Medical School, Boston. He was an assistant professor of radiology at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina from 1998-2004. He is a fellow of the Cardiovascular Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and has a European Board of Interventional Radiology qualification.
Professor Ryan is a director and board member of the Voluntary International Children's Medical Charity, Operation Childlife (reg charity No 20005). With Operation Childlife, in cooperation with The Christina Noble Children鈥檚 Foundation, he has been involved in helping develop specialist medical care and expertise in paediatric hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Professor Ryan specialises in delivering minimally invasive oncological and endovascular treatments for many forms of cancer, vascular malformations, liver disease and for bleeding and thrombotic disorders. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive treatments for cancer including; chemoembolization and ablation therapies.
He has specialist expertise in the treatment of vascular malformations, as well as a clinical research interest in the endovascular management of haemorrhage and thrombosis. He has a specialist interest in the diagnosis and minimally-invasive treatment of acute life-threatening haemorrhage.
Professor Ryan described a novel technique for the investigation of patients with occult bleeding that widely cited in the scientific literature. He also has a particular interest in urological problems associated with gynaecological malignancy and with his gynaecological oncology colleagues at St James鈥檚 188体育, has co-developed new techniques and management strategies for patients with these problems.
He also has a particular interest in the interventional management and treatment of chronic liver disease, in minimally invasive treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma, and Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunts (TIPS) for portal hypertension.
Professor Ryan has been actively involved in academics and clinical research for over 20 years, during which time he has published and presented more than 165 scientific papers, editorials, articles, presentations and book chapters with more than 2,260 citations in medical literature. He has been involved for many years in medical device testing, evaluation and development and has worked as a medical advisor to a number of medical device companies. Professor Ryan has lectured in Europe, Asia and the USA and has been on faculty for international conferences for over two decades.
